Hey Justin, this is Tres from your History of Graphic Design class. I was looking at your design, and it's coming along. A few things I might bring out, just to let you think on pushing the design more:
I think the "G" and "S" inside the lamp is not bold against the gradient of the light. It gets lost quickly, due to the light strokes of the outline for the letters. To me, I think they are best if they were left out of the lamp, just so they won't hinder the progress of this logo. If you decide to keep the letters inside there, I suggest finding a way to make it stand stronger.
Also, I may not think that the gradient is needed for the logo. Maybe for advertising, when you are able to illustrate.
I do like the color choices for the color version of the logo, going with a complementary color scheme, with the yellow being a bit orange. Again, I would reconsider of keeping the letters inside the lamp post. I think it'll stand stronger without the letters getting lost in the process.
